I've WON your hourly PRIZE, Chas! I just have to click on the pop-under window graphic that looks like an epileptic Windows dialog box to claim it!

The new tower is cheaper, much more powerful, more expandable then the last tower.
Apple always has something better, and faster up its sleeve.
ALL Computers are transitional.
What was king of the mountain yesterday, is bottom of the heap tomorrow.
Four CPU's X Two Cores each = Eight-Way Computing, the max of the current OSX.
16 CPU support is probably right around the corner.
You may not need it, but I know plenty of folks who can use the power.

If you really need that much power and don't want to pay for it, buy 4 or 5 minis and install OS X server on one of them. Then spread the rendering task between the 5 machines using Xgrid. Xgrid will spread the heavy lifting between the other workstations and it is free to use. The only requirment is that you have a copy of OS X Server to cordinate the clients. 5 Minis and a copy of OS X Server on eBay will cost about the same as a basic MacPro.

Chas,
Didn't Connecting Point used to be a big chain? I haven't seen one in years.

You only know a relative handful of people (there's only one of you). Unless they're giving away the ram, then it's not cheaper, it's an order of magnitude more expensive. I'm just curious how they justify removing a slotted tower from the grasp of so many? I believe there must be something else. There has to be something else.

The last G5s started at 2k for dual 2.0/512/160 and now you can get a quad core 2.0/1GB/160 for $2125, I don't understand what you are so upset about.

For a long time a decent computer was $2,000 (from ][+ to 486), so the MacPro is not that expensive and adjusted for inflation it is cheap for a consumer purchase.
Of course you can get an eMachine for $350 and a dual core mini for $600.

That's why I suspect Apple has something else coming out.
I've said many times that I'd like to see Apple bring out a smaller tower, akin to the MDD.
Same processor, but maybe only two internal HDs, and one or two PCI slots.
But I don't believe/agree that Apple has removed " slotted tower from the grasp of so many" at all.
One can get a Mac Pro with AirPort and BT (optional, sadly) for $2200. I don't see that as being out of the grasp of so many, significantly more so than the G5.
The RAM *is* more expensive. And it may not get down to <$100/G, but it will get cheaper. Like all RAM before it, it starts out very expensive, and generally gets cheaper.
Nobody who actually needs 8-16G of memory will be denied, if they're patient. It's vaguely similar to buying a Civic and installing $10-$1200 worth of rims and tires, and then more for aero-effects, Erector Set wings. The memory may not have the bling, but for those who can use it, it will be worth the expense.

This thread is silly.
Yes, there are people for whom these machines make sense.
Yes, there are people who expect the features of a pro machine but can't justify the extra expense of the current line.
I guess we still need to establish who is right and who is wrong....

I bought one for work. I kept my last computer almost 7 years and hopefully this one will offer enough power to do the same. Makes the high sticker price bearable.
