What's the most recent Christmas song that you think is or will become a classic?
#31
When i started teaching guitar i would ask my students what their favorite christmas songs were so they could learn them and was surprised how many said "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway. the students requesting it are all african american. so am i but i had never heard it before and i am of the Donny Hathaway listening generation. so this song has traction in the AA community.

This Christmas

on a related note, i asked a student the christmas question this morning. her favorite is "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas." Hadn't heard of that one either though it came out the year i was born. i really need to get out from under this rock more...

Of course, when Classic and Christmas comes up, the "Messiah" rises to the top. My favorite is the three album Argo clothbound boxed set of Marriner's 1978 version.
Now it can be difficult to get a handle on Handel, so here is some Handel that you have heard before, even if you didn't know it:

It wouldn't be Christmas without presents, the good, the bad, and the ugly, so here is one.

Oh dear, we seem to have gotten away from Christmas, but no worries, the Ukes _do_ have a Christmas album:

That was a great question, pinkoos.

There is a song that's huge in the Christian Praise Music category called "Mary Do You Know" that has become sort of a standard in many Christian churches.

Darlene Love's singing of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is a classic for David Letterman viewers. (From the Rolling Stone link.)

"A Perfect Christmas" by Mulled (an Irish band) has that classic feelgood vibe to it. It's very catchy too.

(Disclaimer: I co-wrote it. But please do give it a listen. I promise that you'll like it!)

Welcome to the forum!
Thanks for the song. Sounds to me like what might have happened if Morrissey had been born 20 years earlier...
Which macs do you use?

This Christmas. I don't know where my head was at. I like The Whisper's version too.

Wow, amazing number of suggestions, most of which I haven't heard of before. Sounds like I have some listening to do!
