Red Flag laws are a big no-no among conservatives.

The root motivation - and justification; conscious or subconscious - for gun ownership is FEAR.
- Fear of the “bad guy”
- Fear of the “others”
- Fear of all unknowns

This fear is expressed at three progressively obsessive states:
1. Caution: They might come!
2. Fear-manifest: They are coming!
3. Paranoia: They are here!

There are also ancillary, fear-related supporting motivations:
- Machismo/manliness - Fear of appearing weak, effeminate
- Peer pressure - Fear of being ostracized by friends, being excluded

GUN OWNERSHIP IS A MENTAL ILLNESS.

GUN OWNERS ARE MENTALLY INCAPABLE OF PERCEIVING THE DANGER THEY ARE TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS.

I am as pro gun control as you can get.

But, this is utter nonsense. Though I can understand the sentiment.

In all probability most, likely the large majority, gun owners do not have any mental illness; at least directly connected to gun ownership.

Demonization is the currency of the far right, and damaging to the process of finding a real solution.

Gun owners have a socialization towards firearms that is at odds with that of many, but in most cases is not entirely without a defensible (not to say entirely correct from my point of view) basis, until taken to the extreme.

By my estimation, like so many things of late, the dysfunction there is within the larger cohort is brought about by the continuous stoking and relentless amplification of the most extreme and blindered end of the gun ownership spectrum. Perpetrated by those whose real interests are voracious greed and, for some, finding a solid foothold/constituency to use in the amassing of power, political and otherwise.

The result, make no mistake, is a deafening cacophony of a distorted, cancerous advocacy of an agenda that delivers a shattering harvest of destruction and harm and tragedy and death to this country.

That din must be ignored and an end brought to the sickening deep corruption of the landscape of gun ownership in this country.

I agree with this sentiment, too. My issue is with the gunners refusal to be well regulated; the knee-jerk reaction against any gun legislation.

As do I.

You most likely have friends, co-workers, or family who own guns and you don't even know it. These are perfectly normal, law-abiding individuals, who don't froth at the mouth. Most would even back reasonable initiatives to control gun violence.

Demonizing all gun owners because of the actions of a few is not really any different than demonizing any group because of the actions of a few.

Granted, she was a Marine, but people like her act like they're out there regularly shooting people. Patrolling the streets engaging with the bad guys.

At least this photo would be more authentic. They probably have string of victims they've shot.

Yep.
I own guns, but I don’t shoot guns.
I inherited most of the guns and don’t really know what to do with them, so they sit in the closet.
My dad had a rifle that has been fired maybe 5 times. My mom, who grew up on a farm where they hunted for food bought it for him. I am not sure why she thought it was a good gift, but that fancy Buffalo Bill commemorative 30/30 rifle is sitting in a nice fleece lined case, in my closet.
There are other stories about the other guns, but the point is, I am a gun owner not a gun enthusiast.

Also, there are no children in my house, so that is why the guns are not under lock and key. They used to be kept in a safe, but a couple rusted, so now they are in a box. None are loaded. With my eyesight I would be better off using the gun as a brick rather than a firearm. Lol. I know my limitations.

I think we can assume the Maine shooter was a gun enthusiast:

Liam Kent, 24, told NBC News that he grew up about a mile away from Card’s family and would occasionally see him around town.

Kent said the family is well known in the area and operates a construction business and described them as “Second Amendment enthusiasts” who embrace a “‘don’t tread on me’ mindset.”

He was also a vet and a trained firearms instructor.

Huh. You’d think with that background, he would have learned “gun safety”. Cause that’s the real problem, isn’t it?

I wonder how long it took for gun stores in the area to sell out of firearms. Always a run on gun sales when the media goes nuts about a mass shooting

ver 30 people shot, horrible. Not as bad as last weekend in Chicago. I know, no one cares about black on black crime, or hand gun shootings
