No, I leave the mail-order stuff to people like you.

How many electric inflators do you go through in a month, anyway?

Ouch! Snap! Damn, that WAS a good comeback. I should have known not to cross swords with your rapier wit.

::wiping forehead:: You got me on that one, man. I'll crawl back to my corner and bandage my wounds.

Electric inflators...heh heh. Wow. Sharp.

"...would you settle for your car being out of comission for 6 weeks? "

Removing the battery doesn't disable your computer. Or have you not figured that out yet?

Bwahahaha! Toyota, which is Lexus, is in the news right now because they are delaying introduction of new models. The reason...they are having problems with quality control and too many recalls. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con...00188.html

I don't believe that I am defending Apple. I'm ticked about having to call since the web site doesn't work, sure.

But get a grip, elmo. You must have never had a real problem in your life to be able to get so anguished about something that in two months will be like an inconsequential dream of a memory. You have zero sense of proportion. Either that or you are desperate for attention.

Dell's recall stated anywhere from 20 to 75 "business days"...I received the first replacement battery within a day-and-a-half of the order. Still have a few more to go.

I'm sure it will be similar on the Apple side too, for the couple I am going to submit soon.

I have.

But it's not a portable computer anymore.

Imagine if the auto manufacturer tells you not to drive your car out of your driveway for 6 weeks. Oh, you can start it and sit in it and listen to the radio, and you can drive it up and down your driveway--but for God's sake, don't take it on the road!

I repeat: if I wanted a desktop computer, I would have bought one. I didn't. I bought a portable computer. But Apple has relegated it to being a desktop computer.

A desktop computer with a 12" screen. I now have a very fast Mac Plus.

So the only diff between a Powerbook and a Mac Plus is speed and battery power?

As for the asinine comparison to a car that isn't portable, a car's main function is portability, a laptop's main function is computing.

You can't actually work on your computer while walking around, can you? Even if the battery is usable?

This madness must end.

hmmmm....it's not a Powerbook, it's an iBook. And the comparison is that they are both desktop computers with very small screens.

Had I wanted a desktop computer with a very small screen, I imagine I could have found one. I didn't want that. But that's what I have, for the next 4 to 8 weeks.

A computer's main function is computing. A portable computer's main function is portable computing.

Fully half the functionality I bought is missing until this battery gets replaced.

Shame on Apple.

While walking around? Sometimes, I do.

And I do carry it from place to place while it's sleeping or turned on.

You are such an Apple apologist that you are putting forth a solution whereby I simply shut the computer down, move it to point B, plug it back in, and turn it on. Further, you are putting forth that it's a perfectly reasonable solution.

Uh-uh. I would have rather that Apple been more diligent about their suppliers and their parts.

And then there's the car, where my wife has been known to do her iPhoto stuff while we drive a couple hours. Oh, sure, I could get a 12v adapter. Nice. Uh-huh.

Were this Dell, you all would be hooting and hollering and making fun of the poor Dell ("Dull") saps who can't carry their machines around and can't just put them to sleep to move them from point A to point B. But the moment it hits Apple, suddenly you get all full of "alternatives" that you put forth as being "reasonable".
