‘I , Barack Who's sane Obama , do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.’”

sounds good to me

I don't know why I bother to put serious posts in threads like this, but

Getting sworn in as president is an extremely formal situation. I assume none of us have any personal experience with that. However, I have been to many lawyer swearing in ceremonies (also formal and serious), and I have noticed that many people use their full middle name in that situation. Maybe using your full name, including the middle name, just seems proper for many people in formal, serious, situations?

If his middle name was Fred we wouldn't be having this conversation right now and you know it.

Exactly - it never never would have even come up if his middle name was Barack Harold Obama, giving him the very same initials, but without the much more "scary" sounding Hussein connotation. As someone else alluded to, Hussein=code for "possible terrorist" to all of the backwater folks. Just like if if his middle name was Abdul (instead of Alfred), Sahib (instead of Samuel), or Rahel (instead of Ronald).

We're not the ones starting these threads (notice who started this one), but somehow it continues to be a subject of "controversy" to some of you. The rest of us wonder what the BIG deal is, it's a freaking name!

At least he is comfortable using his given name and doesn't feel the need to change it to something like "Bobby" or "Joseph" like ethnic members of the opposition party have been known to do.

BTW - you know what's next, don't you SAM?

For the inauguration he's going to wear a turban and place his hand on the koran. Michelle will be the one in the burka.

You must have actually read Sam 's link ?

He's so comfortable with his given name he used it all his life, except for the part of his life during and before college when he preferred the more informal Barry Obama. Which at this point in time would be about, oh, HALF his life.
Course one could claim that represents his whole ADULT life , except for when it is convenient to claim an adult is an adult at 15.

Teenage Obama preferred Barry? You mean, as a teen, he had not quite settled on his self-image and tried out a nickname for a spell, ultimately settled on his given name as an adult? Who does that?? The horror!

And who is saying that? Is this the same tactic as referring to yourself as the guy with a funny name when the other guy has said that? Mike Sellers, this is an example of inoculation at work.

My brother is a junior, just like Obama. When we were all kids he had a nickname, just like Obama. It distinguished him from my father and saved him from the indignity of "Jimmy" or "Little Jim." After my brother left home he said that he preferred "Jim" instead of his nickname. I expect the same was true with Barack Obama, as he grew older he dropped his "kid" name and assumed his adult name. It just does not seem like a big deal to me. It's completely understandable if someone cares to give it some thought.
