Chiming in... very happy to hear that all of the family has survived and is generally OK. Of course the post-storm environment can be chaotic and dangerous, but I have no doubt that Rudie will rise to the occasion. You may be hosting the whole family soon !

If there's a fund site set up that we can trust, let us know !

This is our thinking also and logistics is still the main issue.
Some main roads have been opened . . . ie; Manila to Tacloban.
Tacloban to Eastern Samar via recent reports is still impassable except by motorcycle.
The main bridge San Juanico is passable but reports of active highway robbers are coming in.
The road on the Samar side of the San Jaunico Bridge is also not yet passable.

Stronger Marshall Law enforcement may be required.

We've already sent funds before the Typhoon to Lilian's Parents and sister before the Typhoon hit.
But there are no places to use it anymore except maybe Cebu that is relatively close or
Manila which is not close.

Some forum members have already sent funds to my Paypal which will be used to help
others in need.

We are thinking of hiring a van and driver to help deliver supplies or a bigger vehicle
depending on the volume of stuff we can get together.

We are mostly locked up by the logistics and communication presently.

Lilian just tried to text Tacloban and Beta-og with no joy still @ 11:39 a.m. APT

More than 300 were confirmed dead in the coastal towns of Basey and Marabut, with nearly all homes and other structures--including evacuation centers--damaged by Super typhoon 'Yolanda,' the Samar Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said.

Three-hundred eleven persons died in barangays Palaypay, Baybay, Lawaan, Loyo, Bacubak, Sulod, and Cogon, Boy Orejola of Basey's local disaster risk reduction council said. In adjacent Marabut town, 24 barangays were heavily damaged with 12 confirmed dead, said provincial staff coordinator Levi Jaboli.

All the schools in that served as evacuation centers were damaged and the Philippine Red Cross team saw people building makeshift shelters on the streets of Marabut. Those who survived either hied off to the mountains, hid in the caves, and sought shelter in the huge stone walls in the town, a Red Cross official said.

These towns need food, water, and medicines as these are as heavily damaged as Tacloban City in Leyte, which is just across San Juanico Strait, Louie Guillem of the Fire Volunteer Brigade of Catbalogan told InterAksyon.com.

The Catbalogan Fire Volunteer Brigade, together with the Philippine Red Cross, is supposed to provide manpower and water to Tacloban but was diverted instead to Basey and Marabut.

Samar provinces reel from Typhoon Yolanda's fury

By Rex Remitio and Dave de Castro

Eastern Samar remains practically isolated from the rest of the country three days after super typhoon Yolanda's onslaught.

Only two major roads link the province to the whole of Samar Island, and both were still impassable.

The bridge between the town of Paranas in Samar and Taft in Eastern Samar was severely damaged by strong winds.

Typhoon Yolanda's peak winds bellowed at more than 225 kilometers per hour after making landfall at Guiuan, Eastern Samar last Friday.

The other major gateway that connects the town of Basey in Samar with Lawaan in Eastern Samar was unable to resist Yolanda's storm surges.

The road was the most direct to Guiuan in Eastern Samar, the town that bore the worst impact of the monster storm.

DPWH officials said it may take two weeks just to make the road passable to all types of vehicles.

For the meantime, only motorcycles could get in.

Thank you SteveO ~!~

We are compiling a list of needed items for the survivors of this catastrophe.
Everyones ideas and suggestions are needed and most welcome.

Currently no new information or ability to communicate with the still isolated
areas of Leyte and Eastern Samar.

Once we establish communications we will define the most needed supplies.
We can assume many, but we want to get an accurate pulse for the most critical
items.

We have also looked a multiple survival kit links to help refine our endeavor
to be mindful of survival needs.

TACLOBAN - Soldiers killed two armed insurgents who attacked an aid convoy en route to typhoon-devastated Tacloban on Tuesday, the military said, as soldiers were deployed to quell looting by hungry survivors.

Some of that aid fell victim to one of the Philippines' long-running insurgencies when 15 communist rebels ambushed trucks on their way to the storm-wracked region, a local commander told AFP.

"There were no casualties on the government side," Lieutenant Colonel Joselito Kakilala said, adding that two members of the New People's Army, the militant wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, were killed and another wounded in the clash in Matnog town, some 240 kilometres (150 miles) from Tacloban.

In the city itself, a curfew was in force as armoured vehicles and elite security forces patrolled streets where famished survivors had raided stores and ransacked other aid convoys.

Hundreds of soldiers and police were in evidence around the city, the capital of the provincial island of Leyte, which bore the brunt of Haiyan, one of the strongest storms on record.

Tacloban -- a city of 220,000 residents -- has been the scene of the worst pillaging. Survivors reported gangs stealing consumer goods including televisions and washing machines from small businesses.

I haven't checked if it has been mentioned here before but I prefer to donate to Doctors Without Borders. As Pam pointed out to me, they do not spend a huge chuck of money for administrative and fundraising costs.
