Aw, cr@p! Hard drive failure!
#1
My office iMac (intel core duo) has had a hard drive failure - I never noticed, since I have a full clone backup (superduper) that happens automatically every night.

Hard drive does not show up at all - I will bring in my Snow Leopard disk from home tomorrow and see what I can see what booting from it and into disk utility shows.

I have disk warrior, and can try that as well (disk also at home).

Assuming all this fails, how hard is it to crack one of these open and install a new drive? I am moderately handy with this sort of thing.

Not too bad if you are handy.
I clip the front bezel up rather than remove the wires for the Camera and Microphone.

Make note that one of the screws on the bottom is longer than the other 3

I can't make head or tail out of this statement.

I get to do one this week, too.

bought a WD Caviar Blue 500 GB for $56 shipped from the 'egg.

I've been into my 2006 iMac three times. The first time will be the hardest as there's tons of adhesive foil to peel back and you're going to hate doing it.

Since I have a cloned backup attached, when the iMac started up and didn't find the internal, it booted from the clone. I did not notice the absence of the internal - it probably happened several days ago.

OK, got it.
Good luck . . . the latches have always been the hardest part for me.
