I put 4 up this weekend with dimmers. Definitely one of those "feel-good installs" for a project with little potential to go wrong.

Oh yes, I use them in my living room with the dimmers 'cuz CFL don't dim well (although some special expensive ones do.) And they're just great, as davester outlined, agree 100%.

I'm still somewhat curious about the Philips HUE bulbs but maybe waiting until after Xmas to get some once the price for the gadgetry comes down. And I think I only need to get 2 more crees to complete my collection as the rest of the recessed can lights are plain switches - no dimming, so there's no need for anything but CFL.

Space-time, you get a $5 discount on them over me - those $24.97 bulbs show as $29.97 in my area...

I HATE that. I'd actually consider paying you to buy 4 and send them to me, but I know the boxes are so big that I'm sure the shipping would eat most of the extra savings.

well, they are even cheaper in SOME places

I can't see spending that much money up front for bulbs. CFL bulbs run about $2 a 4-6 pack at Costco. Those LED bulbs use maybe 1/2 the energy of CFL bulbs, but when you factor price, energy use/cost and longevity, I'll pick CFL any day. EXCEPT if you need bulbs for a battery powered system, like a boat. ESPECIALLY for a mast head light that is way beyond a PITA to get to.

You're leaving important factors out Racer X. The light quality, longevity and dimmability of CFLs absolutely sucks in comparison to the Cree LEDs. For me, that's worth every penny.

well, LEDs last @20x longer, but cost @20x more, so its a wash. And I use cool white bulbs @3400K, and love the light, which I am an expert at judgeing, qualifying and quantifying, as I am a commercial photographer who specializes in scientific and industrial work.

Trust me, I wouldn't be using the Cree CR6 in anything but a dimmable recessed can lighting situation. But for that application they are really nice.

I have a bunch of other recessed can lights, but since they're not dimmable, they'll get CFLs for $2-5 (I try to get the stuff that has a good color light and not just the cheap CFL $1 "off-blue light specials".

Anyone at MRF live in an area where you can pick them up for $20? A $10 savings might be worth asking them to pick up and ship.
