Mac Java 7
#1
Is this a must have?

Does it have anything to do with my problem below?

I have 18.8.2 and keep getting the "you need to install plugins to view this crap" in yellow across practically every page I go to. I installed the latest version of Firefox 18 just Saturday.

I'm brain dead.

On my system with Lion one goes to utilities folder and opens Java preferences panel that will display installed version of Java. Likely similar on earlier systems as well.

Only if you installed it separately.

Most reliable way is to open the Terminal, and type Java -version

My MBA with ML says, ( To open "Java Preferences," you need a Java SE 6 runtime. Would you like to install one now? )

Haven't missed any yet in the few weeks I have it so at this point I see no need to install unless it's something I really need.

You ignore the 1. You have Java 6 rev 37. Which OS are you using? In 10.6, this version will still work, other than in Firefox which has blocked it for no good reason.

Wait a minute! Aren't we supposed to block it?
I am on 10.6.8.
