You'll never get the screen in as well as they did at the factory. The Apple "Genius" probably had little choice but to replace the whole lid.
I saw strips and 17" Unibody display for less than $200. Is the old 15" MacBook Pro really that expensive to replace?

It wasn't a repair quote for some kind adhesive strips, it was a replacement screen quote. $500-something for parts and the rest labor. Included screen and hinge assembly. Something about them both needing replacement.

Mine isn't completely off, just the lower left corner where they usually go bad first. No room to slide anything in there without actually separating screen from the outer lid casing, which I won't do. So I guess, it's squirt some glue in and hope it holds. I haven't researched it yet.

Sell it as-is on eBay, put the money toward an upgrade. Broken stuff still sells for surprisingly good prices on eBay.

A drop of low viscosity super glue should flow into the space between the screen and the frame.

There are some that are more viscous some that are less.
