If this is your current situation, you shouldn't even be looking at a replacement laptop unless the one you have is not working at all. Use your iMac to do your design work and portfolio. When your wife is back working and you're making some money, THEN you can buy yourself a new Mac.

Speaking as one who has been in that situation before, you have to get your priorities straight.
That's why the $50 a month was so important. I can swing that.

Alas the other one is on sale elswhere. This one was the only "open box" priced that low ($300 off new). The others at Best Buy were only around $100-200 off new.

FYI, here is their "Open Box" description. Nowhere does it say "used for 3 years and then returned."

but I'd bet it was what was previously suggested that someone returned their old computer...although, the SN on the receipt should make that easy to figure out.

Geeksquad is so bad I wouldn't put it past them to lose a repair for 3 years.

That's where the false advertizing comes in. It was listed as "open box - fair condition". Nowhere in the description was refurbished or pre-owned. I would not have gone to the store with that $799 price tag if it was described as "pre-owned" or "refurbished." The savings off of a new one of the same model was too small. The i7 that I was interested in at Microcenter was listed as refurbished (2011 model) and was more than 1/2 off of its original price new.

This was clearly "pre-owned." I doubt it was store demo with the sticker residue on it. It did not have any "Geek Squad" refurb check-points in its description. Since they still sell that model new, they either made a mistake in listing, or something more malicious.

Anyway, this is just beating a dead horse (wasn't there an emoticon for that?).

There will be an epilogue tomorrow.

EXCEPT it wasn't. The hard drive is failing. And the battery is consumed. AND there's no 1-year warranty.

Yep.

As a rub, just got an email from OWC about "pre-owned" Macs. They have this model for sale for only $100 more with 90 day vendor warranty. Also battery is gauranteed for 70% of original capacity. And it has 8GB RAM. And it's from OWC!
