Tesla quality is inconsistent. Every time this subject is raised with mention of a new defect, fanboys keep saying that the body-panel-fit problems have been solved. It's not always about the body panels.
Tesla post-sales service is non-existent.
Tesla's designs were once cutting-edge, but are rapidly approaching obsolescence.
Tesla's tablet-controls are insanely stupid, dangerous, and infuriating.
Tesla has been using their customers as Guinea pigs to test their robotic driving controls, putting lives at risk.
Some of these things were (perhaps) forgivable in a startup. Not in a mainstream auto-manufacturer.
This is a bad time for their CEO to be out playing with his new toys instead of running the company. It puts the future of the company into question as those with more experience at bringing successful vehicles to market catch up and speed past them on the tech, but without the safety, service, and drivability baggage.

Notably the article talks about what the Toyota engineers was "under the skin". It was the engineering in the drivetrain and the controls that thy are talking about being impressed by, not the vehicle as a whole.

Yeah..... most of my ilk don't really care about the aesthetics... We think the hidden stuff.. space frames, transmissions, motor designs... those are where the beauty lies.

I just have to interject specifically that touch screen controls which require looking at and touching an 2D image based control (as opposed to a physical button than can be activated by position and feel alone) have been scientifically proven to diminish operators' focus on other tasks.

It's cheaper to manufacture touchscreens and also more flexible for the manufacturer to release software updates down the lines and change the look and functionality of touchscreens. BUT, all of this at the cost of usability (not having to look at controls) for the driver, as you note.
I assume that touch panels will continue to be used in cars going forward, but I would love to see more things going back to physical buttons.

My cars, which predate touchscreens in cars by a couple years, all have basic input selection, volume controls and preset station tuning on the steering wheel. Is that still a thing in Tesla and other touch-screen cars?
