Last night I was using ichat to video chat with my brother. We decided to try out Big Bang board games which allow you to play checkers or tic-tac-toe over the internet. The tic-tac-toe game would never let us connect and then ichat crashed. So here's my problem:

Whenever I try to start ichat now it just hangs forever. I've tried repairing permissions and I've tried restarting from cd to repair the drive. I've also throwing away all of the ichat preferences and restarting the program. It won't even let me finish typing in my new preferences and it freezes up. But the problems don't end there! My mail keeps checking for new mail forever and I can't view anything. Obviously something is really wrong.

So what do I do next? DiskWarrior?

When you figure it out let me know. My wife's iBook is doing many of the same things. I finally gutted her email and started over. Now I'm trying to get her Safari bookmarks back and iChat will be next.

Adium won't even start. It tries and then crashes. Something nasty is wrong.

Well, you can't run DW on an intel mac so that's out. As is running DW on a G4 with the mbp in target mode, DW can't see the drive. And starting in single user mode to run fsck didn't help at all. I think I'm left with one of two options.

1) if it's a corrupt file i can reinstall the OS and retain my settings. But what if the corrupt file is one that gets saved?

2) I can reformat and reinstall

Any other thoughts?

Ok, that was not the solution. The same problem exists. So it's not a hard drive issue, it's a corrupt file issue somewhere. Something common between Mail, adium and ichat. Now adium and ichat I can see, but Mail? What would be common between them?
