[quote sscutchen]BTW... The 500 is a Volvo under the skin.
Do you have proof of that? I'm aware of the Volvo/Ford relationship but I didn't know it ran as deep as Ford-branded Volvos. If this is true the 500 moves near the top of the list for our next new car purchase.

Oh yes, Ford-branded Volvos. All over the line. Hadn't heard that about the 500, but others, sure.

All that tells me is that Volvos are crap, not that Fords are good.

There are these great little all wheel drive Station Wagons made by a company called Subaru, perhaps you have heard of them...

Ford has not built a really good CAR since 1969. if it weren't for their pickup trucks the company would have died a long time ago.

Why yes we do!
"This sedan is based on the previous-generation Volvo S80 platform, and makes use of that car's all-wheel drive and safety technology."

Great car with a lackluster engine. Ford has all the parts on their shelves to make the 3Liter Duratec V6 a 300HP screamer with tons of torque. Several of my friends have swapped out the 2,5L V6 block for a 3L in their SVT Contours. These parts have been around since 1997.

Hopefully they will boost the power. Small engine only equals good gas mileage when you take it easy. If you hammer it, it will be as or more inefficient than a larger more powerful engine.

I heard rumors that Ford was going to intro a diesel (somewhere in the 4.4L range) that would be available in the Expedition, F150 and Land Rover. Word was that the epa estimates for the Expedition where 20/24 with the diesel. Power and torque ratings were supposed to compare favorably with the 5.4L gas engine. I think that this might boost sales if the cost for the engine was well controlled.

The 500 seems like a good car. But with only 200hp the press didn't really like the car.

They like the Charger with the Hemi, even though I imagine most Chargers are sold with the V6.

Even Toyota has learned to drop the hot rod (260+hp) 3.5L V6 in RAV4, Camry, etc. Again I think most sales are the 4 banger.

Harbour,

Subaru makes a good car. I've considered buying one on many an occasion. Nonetheless, it's nice to see a larger sedan with all-wheel drive and the 500 is a solid choice in its class. Not the only choice or necessarily the best choice but a solid model overall. Nothing wrong with that.

[quote elmo3][quote robfilms]i would love for ford to turn the 500 into a stationwagon that seats 7 forward facing passengers.
Dude, they've done that. It's called the Freestyle.

What's happened, for those who aren't paying attention, is that the station wagon market is still alive--but for some reason, the marketers have decided that what people want are an "SUV". So instead of building a conventional station wagon version of a car, they lift it a few inches and give it an SUV look.

But in the end, what they're doing is taking the sedan platform and building a wagon version of it.
The Freestyle is as much a station wagon as a Mac Mini is a Dell Inspiron. Ditto with the Subaru Outback, which is actually categorized as a "light truck" by the feds. Those things are "crossover" vehicles and are little more than SUVs built onto car platforms. I have no need for any rollover-prone vehicle with unnecessary high ground clearance. I think I have been on two unpaved roads in my entire life and have made it through blizzards in FWD cars just fine.

Poochies,

You didn't account for the human factor. I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind the primary reason an SUV (or any vehicle with a higher center of gravity) rolls over is the individual behind the wheel.
