>>And whether it's the right message or the wrong message isn't for me to decide.
...and yet you're going on and on about what you found wrong about his speeches.
Get your own congregation and figure out how to empower people.

For a minister like this, he is his message. He has his congregation because of his message. He knows what he's doing and he knows the consequences of words. I'm sure he'd speak very differently to you personally than he does to his congregation and its because you have different needs.

[quote Black Landlord]Strange-- I though research did seem to support differences in the way our brains are wired (across various races).
There are plenty of undeniable differences in other physiology-- skin makeup, most obviously, but we're clearly affected differently by dietary differences, have markedly different risk factors for various diseases, do different things with body fat distribution, etc.
Good point, I don't completely rule it out, I think it a long time ago, racial differences, and differences in learning ability, etc, were so rife with bias, bigotry, and phony science (back when Asians and negroes were depicted in white people's science and medicine books as being mongoloid inferior mutants) that once those toxic myths were dispelled, the opposite reaction occurred, it became sort of forbidden to discuss racial characteristics or differences rationally, without arousing suspicion. Now it's an accepted area of objective study, which is good. Gender, on the other hand, is still more controversial, and it's still slightly forbidden, or at least risky, to discuss cognitive differences.
[quote Black Landlord]There are also significant differences in our cultures, even in homogenous borg-like America; to suggest that (for example) black folks have the same influences as white because we all live in the same country, and thus that the influence on our development is the same is just not kosher, and I can't see how it would be possible to hold this perception without extremely limited exposure to black culture(s).
Also a good point. Culture and family has more influence on educational or learning development, it's a more credible case to make. Is it useful? It may be just a chapter in a longer discussion within the community, a topic with competing points of view.

Absolutely. Whether it's the right or wrong "message" is different than having ideas about what's right or wrong with the speech. It wasn't "speeches", it was an individual speech, at an NAACP dinner in Detroit.
Get your own congregation and figure out how to empower people.
Take the plugs out of your ear, and pay attention. If you're gonna stick your foot in, at least have something to contribute. Apparently, you didn't hear or read the speech we're discussing.
[quote blacklandlord]To quote Wright, did you listen to that whole sermon?
Actually, YES! I watched it from beginning to end, twice. It was running on a Canadian cable news channel, and it recycled, running twice consecutively. I left it on, and ended up watching the whole thing each time.
Next thing you know, i'll be ordering books and DVDs from Wright's website. A fan in the making?

I'm coming to the conclusion that guitarist just likes typing, and reading what he's typed.

Løpe was no different, and he's been all but canonized now.
Appreciate guitarist while he's still here . . .

I'm about as interested in Wright's opinions on biological differences between races as I am in the Pope's opinions on evolution.

What I want to know is when someone from Obama's camp tells Wright to STFU. The guy is killing elements of his campaign. Of course he's loving his 15 minutes, and has decided that he's the second coming, so he ain't gonna shut up.

[quote guitarist]His case was built on a peculiar right-brain, left-brain argument, explaining how African language, music, and culture evolved one way, and white European culture evolved another way...
Why do I get a sense of deja vu?
Ebonics anyone?? I didn't realize it was 1996 again...

call me a crazy white dude, but some of what Wright rants about makes sense.
i'm not sure how it sounds coming from a "man of God," what Jesus would think if he were here, and Wright surely leaves out a lot about his race that needs to be addressed.
i'm amazed that people think he's totally nuts -- some of what he says is factual, but many choose to look the other way.
still & all, blustery blowhards like Wright tend to lose people by shouting so loudly.
