iPhone in Hawaii, I know it's USA

Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?

That's easy. In order to qualify for federal funding to build an interstate highway, it must begin and end at a military installation. So I-1 links the main bases on Oahu. The senator from Hawaii at the time had major influence, and got an exception made just for his constituents.

Interstate highways are not for our convenience, they are to be able to move military materiel.

I-4 in Florida goes from Daytona Beach to Tampa. There is MacDill AFB in Tampa, but it's several miles from where I-4 ends. And there is no military base in Daytona Beach.

There are plenty of interstates which are contained in only one state, and do not begin and end at a military installation.
