ductless mini splits
#1
who knows?
I'm thinking 2 or 3 zones at most. 1200 sq ft total.
400 up, 800 down.
as a crow flies I'd say the 2 head ends would be about 50' apart, max. Prolly less.

I assume these are more efficient then 10 and 15yo ttw A/Cs.

Right now we have a 12k, and 8k and a 1500.

Are the conduits pretty sturdy for inclement weather? Are they cooling only or can they heat as well?

Currently we just use the AC on killer days (like the last 2). I assume we could use a ductless system the same and we wouldn't need to cool 24/7 once th season starts.

A day to install? $4k or so all in?

I assume these are more efficient then 10 and 15yo ttw A/Cs. Or trust numbers.

Right now we have a 12k, and 8k and a 1500. that's a lot of k

Are the conduits pretty sturdy for inclement weather? yes and they have sturdy clamps to hold them in place. Are they cooling only or can they heat as well? heat was an option with ours, at 21¢/kwh for electricity w declined

A day to install? $4k or so all in? maybe an afternoon for 5 guys and an easy install ( unless their expertise is hamburgers )

I don't know about the cost, but the SEER for better brands ranges from 14 to 20. Higher numbers are only possible installed on the north side of the house. The cost to install depends on local labor costs.

This used to be a good place but I have not read it much since I moved away from regular outside temps over the 90's. http://hvac-talk.com/vbb/forum.php

I've only used the pre-charged line-sets a couple of times. It's usually hard piped on hangers in a commercial application and we've run way long with the appropriate upsize in pipe.

I assume these are more efficient then 10 and 15yo ttw A/Cs. Or trust numbers. More than likely, but check the numbers.

Right now we have a 12k, and 8k and a 1500. that's a lot of k using rough square footage only @ 400sq' per ton, 36k would be the goal. Other factors than just plain square footage.

Are the conduits pretty sturdy for inclement weather? yes and they have sturdy clamps to hold them in place. Are they cooling only or can they heat as well? heat was an option with ours, at 21¢/kwh for electricity w declined Heat pumps are available. Conduits? The refrigeration and power/control wires will be run between the evap units and the condenser. Looks/sturdiness will depend on you, the installer, and local code.

Currently we just use the AC on killer days (like the last 2). I assume we could use a ductless system the same and we wouldn't need to cool 24/7 once th season starts. I imagine you could choose to use it any way you would like Thermostat for each evap, do what you want with it.

A day to install? $4k or so all in? maybe an afternoon for 5 guys and an easy install ( unless their expertise is hamburgers )Brand of units? Lathe and plaster? Room in panel? Routing of power/refrigeration lines? Plumbing to sanitary sewer or dry well? Inspections? etc.

Fritz,

My parents just looked into a ductless mini split. The number you listed is similar to the price they were quoted. However, factor in the cost of an electrician and necessary permit(s). Both are necessary in Nassau county. That and get quotes from a couple of other plumbing/HVAC/etc people. The price will vary but I doubt it'll vary that much.

My parents decided to just stick with their window a/c units, which are all energystar certified models. Old energystar but still very efficient. The standards to meet energystar change over the years. How often the standards changes varies from product to product.

thanks for the useful and rabbits with plates of meat spinning information.
I'm shocked and disappointed that we don't have an HVAC expert here.
Perhaps we should do some interviews and marketing.

Sorry, I couldn't resist this. ("This" is actually pretty good... something.)
(For what it's worth, I actually am an HVAC expert. I'm also an UHVAC expert. If you want some advice on Ultra High VACuum stuff, well, here I am.)
