Envelope with plastic window - recyclable???
#1
I try to recycle whatever I can--could do a lot better, I know--and I often get envelopes with the little see through plastic "window" where an address is displayed.

Can I simply put those in the bin with other paper recyclables?

we are able to recycle those around here with our normal office/mixed paper. Not sure if that would be the same for all areas. Does your city/town have a website where they list what they will accept?

almost all of those plastic windows are made of PLA (corn, soybean base) , Cellulose Acetate (wood pulp) or Glassine (wood pulp)
degradable and compostable.

I have wondered the same thing myself.

Thanks for that info, billb, it sounds like they should be fine in with the rest of the paper goods.

If they are mixed in with paper recycling , part of the recycling paper pulp remove contaminants process seperates the pulp fibers from extraneous material. Those plastic windows float to the top (despite what they are made of) and paper clips and staples sink to the bottom.
(Giant vat of soup :-) )

I worry about vinyl(s) (coatings) and glues in compost so I avoid paper shreddings in the compost that might end up in my vegetable garden.

the plastic bladder and spigot go in the plastic recyclables.
the cardboard box is probably coated with wax like a milk box, if they bothered with the wax.

Worst thing is those nasty multi-layer juice boxes that are damned convenient with kids. paper/ foil or plastic bin ?
