I saw that but didn't post it here because it's another subscriber exclusive and I didn't want to mess with it. But I was amazed at the epic stupidity.

I’m not up on what Michigan has for restrictions. Masks in commercial buildings, limited indoor dining, etc.? Or did the legislature wrest control from the governor and open the state?
The legislature (actually, the Michigan Supreme Court) did in fact take away the governor's emergency powers, but failed--so far--at doing the same with the health department so a state-wide mask mandate is still in effect along with 50% capacity and a curfew on indoor dining and bars.
There is a petition drive to nullify the law that gives emergency powers. They have enough signatures and if certified, it can go directly to the Republican-majority legislature and it will be veto proof.

And while people are complaining about having to wear masks, Michigan hospitals are full and younger patients are the ones getting sick.

So parents decide to enforce not mask wearing; the kid gets a mild case but has long term effects. Turns 21 and sues the parents for negligence.
Plausible?

Yeah, isn't that a nice quirk in the law, 1/10th of the population gets to decide what everyone will have to do. (if my math is correct). Approx. 350,000 signatures are need to get a petition put on a ballot, or, if the legislature wants, they can debate and vote on that petition. If it passes, the ballot initiative becomes a veto-proof law, the ballot initiative doesn't have to appear on the ballot anymore. So a minority can make the rules, if the legislature approves.

Definitely bad lawmaking.
The problem is the Republican-majority legislature doesn't represent a majority of voters because of gerrymandering. Fortunately, that will soon change in Michigan with the independent redistricting commission (which, by the way, is the result of a ballot initiative). Republicans know they will lose their majority and are trying to ram through everything they can before the clock runs out.

Hmm, Canada is having a surge that seems to be from the new mutations. They are several weeks behind the US in vaccinating essential workers that are crossing the border (mostly truckers). That could be a partial source of the recent wave.
Edit: They just announced the Canadian F1 GP has been cancelled for this year (week leading up to June 13) due to high cases.
